Damage at Zero Miles an Hour

wellness in Plano TX

In the 18 years I have been in practice, technology has really changed and not to sound like an "old timer" but I'm not sure all the improvements in technology has enhanced our lives. Sure, some aspects of our lives have gotten easier but at what cost to our health?

Various studies estimate Americans sit for anywhere from 9-14 hours a day either in front of a computer, in their car, in front of the tv or all of the above and these studies were only directed at adults they did not mention kiddos!

What does this do to our health? Many patients we see suffer from Neck pain, upper back pain/stress, heachaces, lower back pain, wrist pain/carpal tunnel issues.... the list goes on and on! - unfortunately.

The Mayo Clinic states:

One study compared adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the TV or other screen-based entertainment with those who logged more than four hours a day of recreational screen time. Those with greater screen time had:

  • A nearly 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause
  • About a 125 percent increased risk of events associated with cardiovascular disease, such as chest pain (angina) or heart attack

This is craziness! People we need to move! We were not made to sit. Our bodies were made for motion and as I tell many of my patients "motion is lotion for the joints".

How can we do this? I have several recommendations:

1. Try a standing desk/station at work.

2. Get up once an hour and stretch or walk around.

3. Do a posture "reset" several times a day - my patients know what I am talking about here

4. Desk yoga

5. Limit the amount of time you are using your smart phone and/or computer when you are in your "downtime"

Sitting adversly affects your spine. You can have dammage at ZERO miles an hour. What do I mean by this? The chronic day in and day out of poor posture with relation to your enviroment causes strain on your spine thereby deterioration occurs faster. We all degernerate it's just a matter of how quickly....

How can Chiropractic help? Well, I can't be there to tell you to move, that is up to you. But what I can do is adjust your spine and by adjusting the spine we can allow those nerves and joints to work the best they can! Not only will you feel better but you will move better, enhancing your life.
